Badrinath Opening Dates: Ritual & Schedule

Badrinath Dham remains closed for a significant period of the year, during the winter months. It is because during this time, the route gets heavily snow-covered, which makes the journey to the temple inaccessible. In this period, the presiding deity is ceremoniously moved to his winter seat at Pandukeshwar (it is a nearby temple where regular pujas continue).

Badrinath opens its doors on the eve of Akshaya Tritiya, which falls between the months of April and May, after a grand procession and shuts down for darshan on the day of Vijayadashami, which falls between the months of October and November. For this year, the temple opened its doors for darshan on 4th May 2025. Make sure to plan your visit & bookings in advance to avoid last-minute hassle.

Best Time to Visit Badrinath Dham

The ideal time to visit the Badrinath Dham is during the summer months of May & June. Why? Because this is when the climate is at its most pleasant, with the temperatures ranging between 7 and to 18°C. It is cold but not chilly like in the winter months. This time is also perfect for both spiritual seekers & casual travellers, offering opportunities for scenic hikes, darshan & temple rituals. Keep in mind that even though the days are pleasant, the nights here are chilling cold, so carry fleece sweaters, woollen clothes, down jackets, mufflers, caps, sun block and gloves.

During the remaining winter months (late November to early April), the temple and its surrounding routes remain closed due to heavy snowfall.

Badrinath Travel Tips:

• Be sure to carry small packets of dry fruits and energy bars, which will help you keep going throughout the yatra.
• Hydration is key — so drink plenty of water & electrolyte-based fluids during your travel
• Make sure that you are wearing comfortable trekking shoes during the journey; carry essentials like a hiking stick, power bank, headlamp & waterproof bag covers
• Get a medical check-up 1–2 months before the trip to ensure you are physically fit for high-altitude travel
• Those with high blood pressure, heart conditions, or severe respiratory issues should consult their doctor before undertaking the pilgrimage.
• Avoid overexertion and rest frequently, especially if you're not used to high altitudes.
